UAE VAT Return Filing Deadline: The 28 October 2026 Date for a Tax Period Ending 30 September

In short

The UAE VAT return filing deadline is tied to your own tax period, not a fixed national date. For a tax period that ended on 30 September 2026, your VAT return and the tax payable with it are due by 28 October 2026 — a Wednesday. The official rule is that the return is filed within 28 days of the end of the tax period, so the exact date depends on whether you file monthly or quarterly. A period with nothing to pay still has to be filed.

The UAE VAT return filing deadline is one of those dates a business treats as routine right up until the month it slips. For a tax period that ended on 30 September 2026, your VAT return — and the net tax you owe with it — is due by 28 October 2026. It is not a single calendar date the whole country shares; it is tied to your own tax period, and the 28-day window to prepare and file is shorter than most owners plan for.

Under the UAE value added tax system, a registered business files a VAT return for every tax period and submits it, with any net tax payable, to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). The rule the FTA sets is straightforward: a VAT return is filed within 28 days of the end of the tax period. So the date that matters to you follows from when your period closes — and for any business whose tax period ended on 30 September, that is 28 October 2026.

What the UAE VAT return filing deadline actually requires

The return is a summary of the period: the output VAT you charged on your sales, less the input VAT you are entitled to recover on your purchases and expenses, leaving a net amount that is either payable to the FTA or refundable to you. Filing and paying are not two separate deadlines — the return is submitted and the net tax settled by the same date. Miss it and both the late return and the late payment are failings the FTA can act on in their own right.

Two parts of that calculation are where returns go wrong. Output VAT has to pick up everything taxable for the period, including sales you may not think of as standard supplies; and input VAT can only be recovered where you hold a valid tax invoice and the cost is used for your taxable business, with certain expenses blocked from recovery altogether. The net figure on the return is the result of getting both sides right, not a number carried over from your bookkeeping without a check.

The length of your tax period decides the date. The UAE government sets the standard periods as quarterly for businesses with annual turnover below AED 150 million and monthly for businesses at or above AED 150 million, and the FTA can assign a different period to particular businesses. Quarterly periods are also staggered rather than all running January–March, April–June and so on, so two businesses can both file “quarterly” and owe their returns in different months. The only reliable way to know your date is to open your profile in EmaraTax and read your tax period and the due date it shows.

Your tax periodWhen it endsReturn and payment due
Monthly (turnover at or above AED 150m)30 September 202628 October 2026 (Wed)
Quarterly (turnover below AED 150m), where the quarter ends this month30 September 202628 October 2026 (Wed)

A nil return is still a return

A quiet period does not cancel the obligation. If you made no taxable sales, or your recoverable input VAT left you in a refund position, you still file the return within the same 28 days. Treating a zero or refund period as “nothing to do” is one of the most common ways a clean compliance record picks up an avoidable mark.

The deadline is for the return, not for the payment alone. A period in which you owe the FTA nothing still has a return due on the 28th — file it even when there is nothing to pay.

Why the 28 days go faster than they look

The window is short because the work sits at the end of it. Before you can file, your sales and purchase records for the period have to be reconciled, your output VAT and recoverable input VAT worked out correctly, and any input tax you are not entitled to recover kept out of the claim. Leaving that to the last few days is how figures get rushed, and a return filed on time but wrong is its own problem. Build the return early in the 28 days, not on the 27th.

What to do before 28 October

Open EmaraTax and confirm your tax period and the exact due date it shows for you — do not assume 28 October applies if your period does not end on 30 September. Reconcile the period’s sales and purchases, settle the output-minus-input calculation, then file the return and pay the net VAT by the deadline. Keep the working papers: the return is only as defensible as the records behind it. If VAT returns are one more thing competing for the last week of the month, this is the kind of recurring, deadline-bound work a finance partner such as our UAE accounting and tax team is built to carry, so the filing is ready well before the 28th rather than on it.

When is the UAE VAT return filing deadline for a tax period ending 30 September 2026?

For a tax period that ended on 30 September 2026, the VAT return and the net tax payable are due by 28 October 2026, a Wednesday — the FTA rule is that the return is filed within 28 days of the end of the tax period. Confirm your own period and due date in EmaraTax before relying on this, as the date moves with your period end.

Is the deadline the same for every business?

No. The date is tied to your tax period. The standard periods are monthly for businesses with annual turnover of AED 150 million or more and quarterly for those below it, and the FTA can assign a different period to particular businesses. Quarterly periods are staggered, so quarterly filers do not all owe their returns in the same month — check your period in EmaraTax.

Do I still file if I had no sales or nothing to pay?

Yes. A nil return, or a return in a refund position, is still filed within the same 28 days. A period with nothing payable does not remove the obligation to file the return itself.

What happens if I file or pay late?

Late filing of the return and late payment of the tax are separate failings, and administrative penalties apply to each. The amounts are set by the FTA and change from time to time, so confirm the current penalties — and whether any waiver or instalment route is available — before relying on anything here.
